Why Is My Air Conditioner So Loud?

Why Is My Air Conditioner So Loud?

Is your air conditioner running, but doing so more loudly than usual?  There are several things that could cause this to happen.

First possibility is your compressor could be wearing out.  When compressors get old they tend to make more noise than usual.  When this happens it doesn’t mean that you have to get a new compressor right away necessarily.  Compressors have been known to run months or even years running loudly.  However if the noise is disturbing you or your neighbors you may want to replace it sooner, rather than later.  If you do decide to replace the compressor you will want to make sure a licensed professional does the work, we do not recommend you do this yourself.

The second possibility is that the fan motor or shaft fan motor bearings are old.  These bearings are usually permanently lubricated, but after years of use the lubrication will deteriorate, causing them to become noisy.  If this is the case you will need to have the a new fan motor.

The third most common reason for a loud air conditioner is that one of the fan blades in the units is damaged or perhaps out of balance.  If the fan blade is damaged or for some reason is rubbing against the inside wall of the unit you will need to replace it.

Finally, sometimes older air conditioners just get noisier as they start to age and deteriorate. Most new residential systems are quieter by design. If noise alone is the issue, and the air conditioning system is over 10-12 yrs. old, you may want to start thinking about a new system. If you aren’t sure what is causing your air conditioner to be loud and are concerned that it could lead to a more serious, unwanted repair it is best to have a professional come look at it sooner, rather than later.  You do not want to wait until it is the hottest day of the summer and your AC stops working all together and then try to get an emergency appointment.
