Why is My A/C Running Constantly

There are a lot of positive aspects of the summer time, but one common complaint that you hear about is the heat, and energy bills skyrocketing to keep homes at a comfortable temperature. If you notice that your A/C seems to be running non-stop, here are some things that you should look for to find the problem and prevent it from happening.

  • Air Filter: If it has been a while since you have changed your air filter, it is time to get a new air filter. When air filters are dirty it restricts the air flow, causing your A/C to work much harder to keep your home cool.
  • Air Conditioner Coils: Check your air conditioner coils to see if they are dirty due to grass, pet hair, mud, etc. This will block the air flow, which will diminish the performance of your A/C. Each year, you should have your HVAC professional perform a system check up to prevent this from happening.
  • Thermostat: If you notice your A/C running constantly, you may want to check your thermostat before doing anything else. If there is a problem with your thermostat that could be the reason why your A/C is not shutting off.
  • Air Leaks or Poor Insulation: Your A/C may constantly be running because it is trying to keep your home cool, despite trying to fight warm air coming through your home. If your home has poor sealing or insufficient insulation, you may be letting in warm air that is causing your A/C to run constantly. This will not only cost you money, but will decrease the lifespan of  your HVAC unit.
  • A/C Unit Needs Maintenance: If you have an older unit, or if you have not had it serviced in a while, your unit may need regular maintenance. Preventative maintenance is a great way to prevent major issues from arising. Call your HVAC professional and schedule an appointment before the summer season begins and you are relying on your A/C to work properly. This will allow them to replace any worn or broken parts, and will help your unit run more efficiently.
