Q. When to repair? When
to replace?
A. This is sometimes a difficult
question. Until recently, as long as a system was in
overall good condition and performing properly, recommending
repair over replacement was a viable option. Today,
however, with skyrocketing utility costs, replacement
has become a much more cost-effective option. In many
cases, you can cut your system operating cost by 30-50%
by replacing your old, worn out furnace and/or air
conditioner. General rule of thumb: if your system
is over 10-yrs. old, if your service repair bills are
increasing in price and/or frequency, or if the repair
is going to exceed 20% of the total unit replacement
cost, it is time to consider a new comfort system.
Our technicians and comfort consultants will always
try to provide you with the information you need to
make an intelligent decision.
Q.
Should I set the thermostat Fan setting to "Auto" or "On"? A.
This answer depends on your circumstances. We generally
recommend leaving the fan in the "On" position
if you live in a 2-story home, or if you have rooms
that are significantly further from your furnace
than others. Letting the fan run constantly helps
keep the temperature throughout your home more even.
Letting the fan run continuously also can cut down
on the wear-and-tear of your blower. In addition,
when the fan is "On", the air is being
filtered. If you have a high-efficiency air filter,
this can significantly improve the air quality in
your home. Leaving the fan in the "Auto" position
allows the fan to operate only when there is a call
for "Heat" or "Cooling". With
new ICM blower technology available for furnaces
and air handlers today, operating your fan can cost
literally pennies per day. For more information on
these products, contact
us.
Q: How often should
I change my furnace filter? A:
This would depend on the type of air filter you have.
Many of the high-efficiency, allergy-reducing "media" filters
only need to be replaced once or twice per year. Electronic
air cleaners should be removed and washed every 60-days
or so. Standard 1" fiberglass filters should be
inspected or replaced monthly, as these only provide
minimum protection for your heating and cooling equipment
and provide little or no improvement in air quality.
You might want to contact
us about upgrading to a higher-efficiency
pleated filter, or to another of the above-listed high-efficiency
filtration systems.
Q. Is there a "Best
Time To Purchase" a new comfort system?
Good question. Obviously, the best time to buy is
when Demand for our products and services is lowest.
This usually occurs in the spring and fall. Some manufacturers
offer incentives between Sept.-Nov. and Mar.-May. These
incentives range from "Cash Rebates" to "Extended
Warranties". We will be there for you whenever
you call, but if your budget allows, and your equipment
doesn't give out, spring and fall might provide for
the best "deal".
Q. Why should I have
my system serviced on a bi-annual basis?
It's very simple. In Louisville, the average heating
and cooling system operates 3,000 hrs. per year, minimum.
Now let's see, if you drove your car just 60 miles
per hour for 3,000 hours, that's the equivalent of
180,000 miles. Would you go that far in a car without
servicing it? Of course not! HVAC equipment that is
regularly cleaned and serviced lasts much
longer, operates much more efficiently, and breaks
down far less frequently than equipment that is poorly
maintained. We also offer discounts on labor and parts
for our "Energy-Saving Customers".
